Education

During my life, I have spent more time in a classroom, as a student, that out of one!  I have attended classes at the following institutions.

  • Western Washington University
  • University of Washinton
  • Seattle University
  • Seattle Pacific University
  • Lesley University

Teaching Background

All of my professional teaching experience has been in the Seattle Public School District.  I have spent time at the following schools since 1990.

  • Whitworth Elementary
  • Leschi Elementary
  • Stevens Elementary
I became endorsed as a Librarian soon after I became a teacher.  I have been the Librarian at Stevens Elementary School since 1994.

Philosophy

Learning is fun, and everyone should try it!

Interests

I love to read!  That probably doesn't come as any surprise, since I am the Librarian.  Picture books, fiction, both short and long, information and how-to books, magazines, newspapers, billboards, cereal boxes, VCR manuals and, well, anything.  I love to read because there is always something I can learn.

I have many other interests as well.

I love to weave. If possible, I would spend some time each day involved in some aspect of weaving.  It is a hobby that continually requires me to think, solve problems, to make decisions.  It uses all of the multiple intelligences (Howard Gardner). Through it, I feel connected to other weavers around the world, both now and from the past.  Plus, at the end of a project, I have something I can give away to a friend!

I love to spend time with my family and friends. After 29 years, Mr.Canning and I are still best friends. We have three amazing and wonderful children. We also have three brilliant and adorable grandchildren. Over the years we have had many pets, right now we share our home with two dogs and one cat.

I love to cook (and of course to eat). I spend time each week looking through a shelf of cookbooks. Soups are my specialty, nothing really fancy, just soothing and nourishing food.  Family dinners have always been a high priority in our household.  This way, we get to enjoy the food and each other!
